Choose a Filling Machine Around Your Product

The right filling system starts with how your product flows, how each dose is measured and how the container is handled. Compare liquid, paste, powder and granule filling methods, then define the automation and packaging operations your production needs.

01

Product Characteristics

Identify viscosity, flowability, temperature, foaming, dust and particle size. These properties help determine the feeding system, dosing mechanism and product contact materials.

02

Dose & Container

Define the target volume, weight or count and acceptable variation. Provide container dimensions, opening size and all formats that need to run on the machine.

03

Output & Integration

Set the required accepted packs per minute at each dose size. Include feeding, closing, labeling, inspection and changeovers when planning the complete process.

Compare Filling Methods by Product Type

Use these starting points to narrow your options. Final suitability depends on the formulation, dose range and selected machine configuration.

Product Type Typical Examples Methods to Evaluate Selection Priorities
Free-Flowing Liquids Water-based products, compatible oils and liquid cleaners. Gravity, pump, flow-meter or net-weight filling, depending on the required dose and product. Foaming, temperature, supply stability, material compatibility and nozzle cutoff.
Viscous Liquids & Pastes Creams, shampoos, honey and sauces. Piston, gear or rotary lobe systems matched to viscosity and particle content. Feed conditions, viscosity at filling temperature, shear sensitivity, particles and dripping.
Fine or Cohesive Powders Flour, seasoning powders and cosmetic powders. Auger dosing with product-specific tooling; weight feedback where required. Bulk density, bridging, aeration, dust control and hopper refill behavior.
Free-Flowing Granules Rice, seeds, beans and compatible dry particles. Linear weighing, multihead weighing or volumetric cup filling. Particle size, flowability, fragility, bulk density and required fill weight.
Piece-Count Products Compatible uniform pieces or small components. Dedicated counting and feeding systems. Piece separation, size variation, counting validation and discharge handling.
Special-Process Products Carbonated liquids, heated products or materials requiring chemical compatibility assessment. Dedicated filling configurations selected for the product and installation. Pressure, temperature, contact materials, environmental conditions and process requirements.

Powder selection: Fine or dusty powders should be evaluated with an auger-based system rather than assumed suitable for a general granule weighing filler. Free-flowing granules may suit weighing or cup dosing, subject to product trials.

Volume, Weight, Level or Count?

The dosing target and the machine's operating mechanism are separate decisions. Agree on how the finished pack will be checked before comparing equipment.

Volume-Based Dosing

Dispenses a defined volume using a suitable mechanism such as a piston, calibrated pump, auger or measuring cup. Resulting weight can change when product density changes.

Weight-Based Dosing

Uses load-cell measurement to control a dose in grams or kilograms. Confirm weighing range, tare handling, vibration control and performance at the required speed.

Level or Count Control

Level filling targets a visible height in compatible containers; counting targets a number of pieces. Neither should be treated as interchangeable with net-volume or net-weight control.

Understanding machine names: Servo describes a drive or control system. Tracking describes moving filling heads, while rotary describes a machine arrangement. These terms alone do not establish the dosing method, usable product range or filling accuracy.

What Makes Up a Filling System?

The exact construction varies with the product. These six elements provide a useful framework for reviewing a proposed configuration.

01

Product Feeding

A tank, hopper, transfer pump, elevator or other feeder supplies the dosing section. Stable feeding helps prevent interruptions and inconsistent product presentation.

02

Metering Mechanism

A pump, piston, auger, measuring cup, weighing assembly or counter generates the dose. Its working range should match the actual product and pack size.

03

Discharge Assembly

Liquid nozzles, powder filling tubes or granule chutes guide product into the pack. Opening size, drop height and shutoff design affect filling behavior.

04

Container Handling

Manual positioning, guides, conveyors, indexing or rotary handling locate containers for filling. Bags and pouches require their own support or gripping arrangements.

05

Controls & Detection

The control system coordinates dosing and movement. Specify recipe handling, container detection, alarms and communication with connected equipment as required.

06

Cleaning & Access

Review contact materials, seals, removable parts, access points and guarding. Cleaning requirements differ between dry products, liquids and frequent product changes.

Standalone Filler or Integrated Packaging Line?

Configuration Typical Operation When to Consider It Planning Focus
Semi-Automatic Filler Operators usually position and remove containers while the machine dispenses the dose. Batch production, frequent format changes or limited workspace. Operator cycle time, ergonomic handling and cleaning between batches.
Automatic Filler Container handling and filling cycles are coordinated automatically within the specified machine scope. Repeat formats and sustained production requirements. Feeding stability, real filling time, format parts and downstream capacity.
Filling & Capping Monoblock Filling and compatible closure operations share an integrated machine platform. Products requiring coordinated dosing and closure handling. Bottle and cap compatibility, closure feeding, access and format changeovers.
Connected Production Line Selected feeding, filling, closing, labeling and inspection machines operate as a coordinated line. Projects covering multiple packaging stages. Capacity balance, layout, accumulation, utilities and communication between machines.

Compare usable output: More heads or a higher maximum cycle rate does not automatically mean more accepted packs. Evaluate the actual dose, container transfer, product feed and slowest connected operation.

Build a Customized Filling Solution

Share these project details to define the dosing method, machine configuration and line layout.

  • Product & Flow Properties Product name, samples, viscosity or bulk density, particle size, foaming, dust and operating temperature.
  • Filling Target Minimum and maximum dose, units, acceptable variation and the inspection method for finished packs.
  • Packaging Formats Container drawings or samples, dimensions, opening, closure type and every format to be processed.
  • Production Requirements Required output at each dose, batch size, operating hours and frequency of product or format changes.
  • Cleaning & Materials Cleaning method, contact material requirements, cleaning agents and access needed for maintenance.
  • Layout & Utilities Available space, equipment before and after filling, conveyor direction, power, compressed air and site conditions.

Special operating conditions: Include the product SDS where applicable and identify corrosive materials, flammable liquids or combustible dust. Required protection and material compatibility must be assessed for the selected machine and installation.

Filling Machine FAQs

Can one filling machine handle liquids, powders and granules?

These products usually require different feeding and dosing mechanisms. Some systems support multiple products within a defined range, but a general-purpose filler should not be assumed suitable for every material. Confirm each product, dose and required changeover before selection.

What is the difference between an auger filler and a cup filler?

An auger meters product through screw rotation and product-specific tooling. A cup filler measures a cavity volume and is commonly evaluated for free-flowing dry products. Flowability and bulk-density stability affect selection; fine or cohesive powders need particular attention to auger design and feeding.

Is weighing always better than volumetric filling?

It depends on the required result. Weighing measures mass directly, while volumetric dosing controls an amount by volume. Product behavior, density variation, target tolerance, speed and cleaning requirements should be assessed together rather than choosing by method name alone.

How should filling accuracy be specified?

State the target dose and acceptable variation in milliliters, grams or pieces. For percentage specifications, confirm whether the value relates to the target dose or full scale. Agree on product conditions, operating speed, sample size and acceptance criteria for the trial.

How can powder dust, liquid foam or product dripping be managed?

Each issue requires a product-specific approach. Powder projects may need suitable feed control, filling tubes and dust extraction provisions. Liquid projects may benefit from controlled filling speed, nozzle positioning or an appropriate cutoff design. Confirm the proposed solution through trials.

Can a filler be added to an existing line?

Review container transfer, conveyor height and direction, capacity, accumulation space and control interfaces. The filler should be matched to both upstream product supply and downstream closing, labeling or inspection equipment.
